Estimates:

At Archaic Treasures we tailor the treatment to the needs of the individual item and the customers requirements. We are happy to take a look at any object to assess it needs and to give a estimate.

Our aim as professionals is to provide an accurate report and costing at a reasonable price.

Free email estimates are  often available for single  items where the conservation issues are clear; no testing is required and the conservation work is carried out.

Sending us photos of your object is definitely a good first step so that we can see if we can assist. Especially if you are a long way from the Studio. Clear photos of the object showing the damage, as well as measurements sent via email will help us provide an estimate. These can be emailed to bookdoctor@hotmail.co.uk

Estimates are often free for simple or minor treatments, to a non-complex single item.

The conservator reserves the right to charge  for estimating for more complex conservation needs, collections of multiple  items, as well as for onsite visits. A charge for more complex estimates where items need planning and/or pre-treatment testing is charged at a rate of £20 per hour plus any tests required.

The conservator reserves the right to charge  for the time taken to prepare a conservation proposal, if the conservation work is not undertaken and significant time has been take to prepare the conservation proposal.

Email estimates are always subject to a full condition survey once the item is in the studio. If there is extra work found that was not evident from the photo you will be notified of any revision to the initial estimate.

For some more complex conservation treatments a free estimate is  not possible. To diagnose the problems of complex, large, badly deteriorated objects, to plan their treatments and costs, and to put this information into a written proposal can take from several hours to several days. Some items will need a detailed assessment of the condition of the object, what has caused its damage, consideration of what you want to do with the object, testing of inks or other elements and decision as to we can ethically and safely offer you.  If the provision of an estimate is due to be time-consuming or involve testing, there may be a  charge of £20 per hour plus any testing  and analysis required.

Estimates may be provided by email, post or in person. The treatment plans proposed will be outlined on the contract document which would need to be agreed with a signature before work is undertaken A 50% deposit is required for work to start.

Work on an object will not start until we have received from you a written confirmation of acceptance of the estimate or a signed contract. Unless there is a hazardous substance or contamination risk to the studio or health of the conservator, found on the item which needs to be made safe. Including (but not limited to) mould and insect infestations. There would be a charge, for any urgent treatment required to enable safe handling for a full assessment.

On-site visits to treat larger collections can be arranged.

Items can only be brought to the conservation studio by prior appointment.
